Too hot to enjoy photography?

I am looking forward to the cooler weather and a little inspiration. This past week I assisted with the Sapulpa Arts Explore camp for 2nd through 8th grade. We had a wonderful time exploring the art, music and dance of Africa. The students learned a lot, as did the teachers and volunteers. With the heat index over 110 degrees it was nice to be inside with the air conditioner, where taking photos of the students learning was fun. I need a little outdoor inspiration now. Maybe something will show up this evening and this week. Keep those shutters clicking.

Gallery Closing in Sapulpa, OK

A sad day on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, the gallery will be closing our store front in Sapulpa, OK. We will continue our Water Street Art Gallery and Daily Painters Blogs. Our art will also be available through the WSAG blog and on our individual artist blogs. Hopefully we have a new location soon and as soon as I know the address I will let you know.

Almost Art Show Time and my son's Spring Baseball

I am gearing up to coordinate the annual Sapulpa Arts Route 66 Art Show the first Saturday of June, as well as preparing for the Water Street Art Gallery 6x6 Art Show and Sale reception is June 3. Both are in conjunction with the Sapulpa Route 66 Car Show along Rt. 66 as it winds through Downtown Sapulpa Oklahoma.

In addition to all the art fun, our family is having a blast watching our son play baseball, well all except Katie who would rather be picking flowers or chasing her friends. Photographing my son play is a joy and this year he is not only catching, but pitching. Bump up the ISO to stop the action and watch for fly balls. Grab your camera, get out there and enjoy the spring weather, before a storm front comes through in a day or two. Well... on second thought keep those cameras handy for the storm clouds, but take cover if a tornado comes through your town. HEADS UP!!

Sapulpa's Rt. 66 Blowout and 6x6 Art Show and Sale

I am currently gearing up for Sapulpa's Route 66 Blowout Car and Art Show on June 5. As part of the event Water Street Art Gallery will host a 6x6 Art Show and Sale. A portion of the proceeds will go to a local charity. Artists are invited to come by the Gallery and pick up a canvas to paint for the event. For more information visit waterstreetartgallery.blogspot.com. Last year we had 100 one-of-a-kind art pieces on exhibit for the month of June and raised more than $300 form Community Care of Sapulpa. We hope to double that this year. The gallery is located at 16 S. Water Street in Sapulpa, OK. This year I am going to attempt a mixed media or pallete knife piece instead of just my photography. We will see what happens.

Photogarphy 101 lesson learned

ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE CAMERA BATTERY IS CHARGED!!

On my way to work Thursday I was admiring the light fog (not good for pictures just for watching) and the vivid colors of the sunrise in my rear view mirror. Suddenly, as I topped a hill, the most beatiful scene was in front of me. The sunrise made the winter grass glow in a sort of orange pink mixture as a gracefully pure layer of fog almost hid a small grove of winter trees. I just had to stop! I found the perfect (safe and out of traffic) spot to pull over, reached for my camera hoping to record the event before the lighting changed... and then it happend. The dead battery light was flashing at me and there was nothing I could do! Dissapointment filled me, I couldn't believe what I had done... and... the spare battery was at home. But, as I sat there I realized that the image was mine to savor for the moment and then the sunlight changed, the grass no longer glowed and the fog turned gray. I put my Jeep in drive, turned on my signal, pulled back into the line of cars heading into Stillwater and went to work with the image saved in my mind. This morning I brought my camera with a charged battery and a backup, but no fog. So sad... but... they are forecasting 2-6 inches of snow on Saturday, so maybe a light graceful snow will blanket the area and I can snap a few. We will see. Until then, here is an Oklahoma cloud over the Cimaron River (unedited... straight from the camera) I snapped on the way home last week. Always be ready for the unexpected, lesson learned this week.

I am back and ready to Blog

Welcome to Spring in Oklahoma. As the storm clouds stir and pollen begins to fill the air my desire to photograph the world around me pushes me to load up my Jeep with camera gear and hit the road. I am watching, camera ready, as the Tulip Tree buds prepare to bloom and Crocus start to push their heads upward to the sunlight. The winter didn't provide much inspiration for me, you would think the first blizzard in Oklahoma over Christmas would get me going, but I was content to stay inside, sipping hot chocolate, and watch the delicate flakes as they were carried by the wind into child high snow drifts. Some relief came when my husband and I took a cruise to Mexico and enjoyed the warm sun as the first snow of 2010 blanketed Oklahoma.

The work at Water Street Art Gallery is growing as our list of artists grows and we try to coax the residents of Sapulpa, Creek County and West Tulsa into our doors. Our artist have been recognized by state and national organizations over the winter and we are proud of them. Photographers and their toys

Don't let the size of a photographer's camera fool you. Photography is 50% skill and 50% being in the right place at the right time. If you are in the perfect spot for the clouds roll back and reveal a breath taking sunset, you must have skills to record it or you are just an observer. Take for instance this photo of a mountain top. It was taken with my Kodak point and shoot digital camera from an American Airlines flight last fall. I knew that if I could get just the right angle the distortion of the double window would not effect my image. I forced my camera to read the exposure from several different points of the mountain and clouds and came away with an image currently on display at Water Street Art Gallery in Sapulpa. Learn your camera, it's limits, and then take the time to think about the image and what you want in your finished print.

Tip 1: Shoot the safe shot, the one everyone shoots, and then experiment, move around, climb on top of something. Take a chance and shoot something different.
